Frequently Asked Questions

Q:      How do I choose the right tile?

There is no "wrong" in tile selection.  You have already decided to upgrade the look of your space and raise the value of your house.  We can only offer a few tips:

If the room is smaller  select a lighter color to make the room appear larger.  Rich colors absorb available light and create a warmer, more intimate environment.

What type of  room will the floor go in?  Do you have children or pets?  Higher traffic areas, such as a kitchen, entry way and laundry room require more resilient flooring, such as porcelain or ceramic.

How much light does the room get?  The size of the windows and the direction they face all contribute to the appearance of your floor.  Always view your selections in lighting that will be used in your home.  We believe that is essential in your selection.  That’s why we insist  you take our sample boards home and see what they really look like.

Your floor should complement - not dominate the other design elements in the room.  If the room is simple, consider a floor with a stronger color and pattern.  If the room has a lot of color and character, the floor should pick up on existing colors and patterns.

Be sure to choose a color to either coordinate or contrast with your current furnishings and cabinetry.  Make sure all the tones work well together.

Q:      How do I care for my ceramic or porcelain floor?

Both products are stain-resistant requiring minimal maintenance.  Simply wipe up spills or spots with a damp cloth or sponge.  Regular cleaning with clear water or a neutral based cleaner is recommended.

Q:      What do you mean by shade variation?

Any variation in color or texture from tile to tile

Q:      What are the advantages of porcelain tile flooring vs. ceramic or natural stone?

Porcelain is harder and more dense than other tile products.  It is also frost proof, as well as highly stain, scratch and water resistant.  Other advantages of porcelain include: Better performance – can be installed in heavy traffic areas, Better finish – more realistic with nicer color range, Less water absorption – less staining and easier clean up.

Q:      Can tile be used in exterior applications?

Yes, but only porcelain or quarry tile can be used outside because they are frost resistant.

Q:      Should sealer be used on ceramic tiles?

The tile is glazed already, so there would be no purpose.

Q:      Is ceramic tile cold?

Tile is the same temperature as the surrounding air.

Q:      Why does porcelain tile cost more than ceramic tile?

Porcelain tile requires natural ingredients - which cost more. Porcelain is made utilizing the most advanced processes and technology.

Q:      Does having a small room mean you have to choose a small tile?

No. When using larger tiles, you ultimately have less grout joints than you would if using small tiles. The more grout joints, the busier the room will appear. So, less grout joints will give you a cleaner, more open look, making a small room larger in appearance.

Q:      How do I know what grout color goes with my tile selection?

Grout color should match as closely as possible to the color of the tile. Some customers tend to want to make their grout colors to  “pop”, but remember your main expense is going to be the tile itself and not the grout. You will want to see the tile rather than making the grout stand out.

Q:      What is the recommended grout joint size?

Standard grout joint is about 3/16”. Tiles with rectified edges can use a smaller grout joint. Tiles with wavy edges may have to have a wider grout joint.

Q:      What is the lead time on a tile order?

         About two weeks.

Q:     Are any brands better than others?

          No.

Q:      What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Porcelain tile is more scratch resistant than ceramic tile. Porcelain is made from dense clay, which results in a denser, harder body. Also, porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, resulting in superior durability and stain resistance.
